Student bio: Marian Farra
“This work is a product of a final project completed during ASTRON 2A03: Perspectives on Indigenous and Eurocentric Astronomy, under Dr. Robert Cockcroft’s supervision, in the Fall of 2023. The project was an opportunity to share and present the knowledge of Indigenous astronomy learned throughout the course, and the method that my partner and I chose to showcase was a resource package that high-school teachers could use to blend Indigenous and Western astronomy perspectives. It is my inherent belief that Indigenous studies should be incorporated into every curriculum in high school within Canada, so students can understand the history behind where they currently reside today. Teaching Indigenous astronomy should also be implemented to show that there are different perspectives to not just history, but science as well. It should also be noted that I am not Indigenous. I am an immigrant from Iraq with Armenian heritage, who migrated to Turtle Island in 2008 with my family in hopes of fleeing a war. I acknowledge my privilege and gratitude for residing in the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee nations. I know there is a lack and an underrepresentation of Indigenous knowledge and communities, so while I continue to educate myself and learn more about the beautiful cultures, I hope to use my opportunities and privilege to raise Indigenous voices as well.”
