Two Eyes on the Sky: The Vitality of Indigenous Astronomy

Student bio: Celina Jayendran

“This project is inspired by a cumulative final assignment I completed for the recently introduced McMaster course Astron 2A03: Perspectives on Indigenous and Eurocentric Astronomy. I entered this course with limited knowledge of Indigenous knowledge systems and astronomy but with a deep desire to learn, understand, and appreciate diverse ways of knowing while also nurturing my personal passion for astronomy. Creating this project was an incredibly meaningful and rewarding experience, and I believe these unique stories from Indigenous communities across Turtle Island are not only beautiful but need to be shared. As a Canadian settler continuing my academic journey, I look forward to finding more opportunities to learn from Indigenous perspectives and contribute not only to the dissemination of knowledge in a way that respects and amplifies these voices but also to fostering truth and reconciliation within academia by acknowledging the scientific contributions of Indigenous knowledge to the field.”
